Personnal comment:
To choose one album from Bowie’s discography would just be ridiculous; his carrier is already part of history. So which one should I choose to post first?….well, “Black Tie White Noise” is, more than 25 years after its publication, a real masterpiece, but, again, the same could be applied to many of his albums. Probably, the reason why this album is so special to me is that it’s a unique masterpiece in its genre: a special blend of rock and jazz. You start with “The Wedding”, an intriguin track in mid tempo, with a strange tone that lives you a funny impression of being nowhere, but Bowie sax playing already makes you think that, somehow, there is something going on. The second track “You’ve been around” erases all you doubts or concerns: the beginning seems to be one of those drum-beating tracks so popular in the 90’s, but, after a minute Bowie starts singing with such an energy and full of determination that you realize that something serious is about to happen. And yes, you’re right, Bowie is singing better than ever, and the music has such an energy and mistery that is hard to resist it, but it’s about three minutes after the begining of the track that the magic materialized: a blowing storm coming from the trumpet of Lester Bowie (yes, sir, Lester Bowie, I bet Ruud has something to say about him) leaves you breathless and sets the tone of the album: an unique, incredible mixture of 5 stars pop and avant-garde jazz delivered by the finest bunch of musicians you could possible assembly at that time. The track that gives the title to the album is, again, another storm of Lester Bowie’s blowing, incredible combinations of rythm and harmonies and a hypnotizing David Bowie singing:

You won’t kill me
You won’t kill me
But I wonder why
Yes, and I wonder why sometimes “
“Looking for Lester” is a track that probably made Miles Davis dance in his grave. This is simply a record to die for.
